HOW WE GOT THE LOOK
155th Avenue Basement
To be totally honest, this basement was a bit of an intimidating space for us at first. When we saw the video provided by our client, we knew it was quite large, and when we walked the property during the consultation, it was even bigger in person than we had imagined. Believe it or not, the space you see above is actually just one zone of the full living space in the lower level. We knew we needed some large items to make sure to match the scale of the room and avoid everything feeling small in comparison.
We started by pulling the largest rug we own to help ground the look and make sure it felt cozy, which also helped to absorb some of the echoes that were pretty loud when it was vacant. Next we started with a neutral sofa with a fairly deep seat. In addition to that, we added two sets of accent chairs to ensure we showcased the amount of seating this space can accommodate. The leather accent chairs have a very large footprint, which helped to fill things out a bit. We knew we couldn’t place just any coffee table with this setup — we needed something that felt large enough so we used two matching cement coffee tables and placed them a bit off center from each other to fill even more space. In order to make sure the sofa didn’t feel like it was floating, we utilized fairly large side tables.
The last and maybe one of the most important elements is the art. We selected this pair of stunning abstract canvases painted by Will Day. Placing them just outside of the view of the sofa helped to widen the space and also gave it a modern twist with the black and white palette. Lastly, some final touches with the pillows and decor helped to make it all feel polished and complete.
